Prius DTC Codes P0A7F and P0A80: A Complete Guide
These are the two most common hybrid battery codes. Here's everything you need to know about diagnosis and repair.

Understanding P0A7F — Hybrid Battery Pack Deterioration
DTC P0A7F indicates that the hybrid battery management system has detected deterioration in the battery pack. This means the battery is losing its ability to hold and deliver charge efficiently. While the battery may still function, its performance is degraded beyond acceptable thresholds.
Key points about P0A7F:
- Early warning that battery replacement is needed soon
- Often accompanied by block-specific codes P3011–P3024
- May still drive but with reduced performance and MPG
- Will eventually progress to P0A80
Understanding P0A80 — Replace Hybrid Battery Pack
DTC P0A80 is the definitive code indicating the hybrid battery pack must be replaced. At this point, the battery has deteriorated beyond repair and continued use risks further damage to the hybrid system.
Key points about P0A80:
- Battery must be replaced — reconditioning won't last
- Usually accompanied by red triangle warning light on Prius
- Vehicle may enter limp mode or fail to start
- Driving with P0A80 risks damaging the inverter and other components
How These Codes Relate
P0A7F is the "warning" stage and P0A80 is the "action required" stage. Many Prius owners first see P0A7F, which then progresses to P0A80 as the battery continues to degrade. Block-specific codes (P3011–P3024) help identify which modules are failing.
Arizona Heat Accelerates This Process
In Phoenix's extreme temperatures, the progression from P0A7F to P0A80 can happen quickly. Heat accelerates cell degradation, and what might take months in a mild climate can happen in weeks in Arizona. We recommend addressing P0A7F immediately rather than waiting for P0A80.
Repair Options
Reconditioning: May temporarily clear codes, but they typically return within weeks or months as underlying cell degradation isn't reversed.
Full replacement: The permanent fix. We offer mobile battery replacement:
- Prius Gen 2 (2004–2009): 28-cell, starting at $800
